Hautes-Alpes
Located in the south-east of France, the Haute-Alpes is a great escape for travellers to taste the mountain climes of France usually known mainly to locals.
Linking the Alps in the north with Provence’s sunny climes in the south, the region is known for valleys as well as its mountainous terrain with some of the loftiest peaks in the country.
For example, Pointe des Ecrins (at 13,462 feet) is located in the area as well as the Meije (13,081 feet), the Ailefroide (12,989 feet) and the Mont Pelvoux (12,973 feet). And with is unique location in the Rhone Alps area, one can view Monte Viso (12,609 feet) wholly found on Italian soil, just over the eastern border.
Its natural wonders are testament to a largely rustic ambiance—there is little industry to take place and disturb its scenic beauty. Endemic wildlife take center stage in this well-preserved natural environment, with half of all flora in the country said to be in the province.
The capital Gap is the chief and largest town in the southern Alpine region, located at the foot of the mountain ranges and the wide expanse of rural countryside. A short distance away visitors and locals alike can enjoy hiking and trails at the Les Ecrins National Park and stunning lake-side views by the Serre-Poncon Lake.
The continent’s highest town, Briancon, is also located in this area in the north. While lower in the valley are one of the largest skiing areas in Guisane whose slopes invite visitors to enjoy. And with the medicinal hot springs of the Monetier-les-Bains town nearby, an afternoon of relaxation can be had, to unwind after a long day on the slopes.
