Alpes-Maritimes

The Alpes-Maritimes, also known as the French Riviera, has over 300 days of sun a year, no doubt bearing the distinction as being one of the most exciting summer capitals in the world.

A department in the south-east of the country, the region is bounded by Italy on the east and hugs the Mediterranean Sea on the south. Its capital, Nice, is known the premier beach city in the country—with fun local nightlife to compliment the long walks on the seashore.

Other areas of interest that make the region a holiday paradise in summer is the coastal area of Cannes, and its famous film festival that attracts the beacons of global movie-making industry, as well as the seaside vistas of the Mentone, Antibes and Beaulieu towns. Immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels, Antibes, once the site of an ancient Roman harbour, has the largest yacht marina on the Côte d'Azur.

Close by the coast of the region is Monaco, a small principality outside of the European union. With a land area of only 1.9 Km, Monaco is the most densely populated country and second-smallest independent nation with its own constitutional monarchy. Each year many visitors are attracted to its casino and pleasant climate, making it a magnet for the affluent wishing to holiday in its sunny climes.

St. Paul de Venice and Tourette sur Loup in the region are both famous worldwide for its contribution to France’s cultural heritage. Its delightful rustic villages with narrow cobblestone streets and picturesque postcard scenes can be found half an hour inland.

The region has very unique craftsman at the helm of its industry, particularly those in the perfumery in the hilly and affluent Grasse city known as the perfume capital of France, olive oil making, pottery and tile-making industries. Cut flowers are also an industry in the region, alongside its holiday tourism.
