Languedoc-Roussillon
The Langedoc-Rousillon region truly deserves its reputation as a popular holiday spot in the French seaside—with over 300 days of sun each year shining on its sandy Mediterranean coasts.
Located in the far south of France, the region takes its name from the language of its inhabitants who value profoundly a gentler, slower pace of life than in the more urbane north of the country. Locals and visitors alike often take advantage of its warm climate by the sea, enjoying the sea breezes during the weekends and holidays.
Languedoc’s reputation as the largest wine producer in France is also well-established. Ancient Greeks and Romans establishing colonies for winemaking and olive-growing for the past centuries are part of its history.
But Langedoc’s commercial vineyards are also balanced with a culture of home production throughout its cities. As in ancient times, sweet wines in households continue to flourish in small quantities. Along its coastal plains, vintages such as Muscat de Lunel usually find its way on tables for family celebrations.
With diverse geographical terrain—from beaches, dormant volcanos, soaring mountains and roaring rivers like Herault, the Orb and the Aude—the region promises a slew of natural sights to behold and a variety of leisure activity and cuisine to match.
Although other than wine, the region is known for produce such as olives, rice, fruit and lavender, with significant market gardening activity that thrive in Languedoc’s sunny climes. Dairy and cheese production is a complimentary activity among most locals in its mountainous areas, where sheep and goats are reared.
The coastal lagoon of Lake Thau produces large quantities of shellfish, particularly oysters and mussels. While fishing communities, both inshore and further afield, are significant adventures in the company of friendly locals along the coast.
It is no surprise that the restaurants and bars which dot Languedoc offer a wide selection of seafood, cheese and wines—the best that the region has to offer.
