French Alps

The French Alps or Rhône-Alpes is region located on the south-eastern border France, named after the Rhône River and the Alps mountain range.

A prosperous region in the country, the Rhône-Alpes economy is second only to Île-de-France. With its snow-capped mountains and abundance of lakes, rivers and forests, tourism is particularly popular. The Alps is a magnet for skiing-enthusiasts, Lyon as a cultural hot-spot and the Ardèche as an outdoor adventure sports and camping center.

Its capital, Lyon, is the second-largest metropolitan area in France after Paris. A noted gastronomic heaven, regional specialties include Lyon sausage, salami, tripe and quenelles (fish balls). Chartreuse liquor is made in the region, also famous for its Bresse poultry and the many varieties of cheese including Tomme de Savoie, Bleu de Bresse, Reblochon and Vacherin. To the east of the region, food has an Alpine flavour common to neighboring countries across the alps with dishes such fondues.

In the winter months, the French alps is the heart of French ski-culture with many of the largest and most well developed resorts located here such as Chamonix, Portes du Soleil, Flanie, La Clusaz, Megeve, and Les Trois Vallee.

Other than for the purposes of skiing its slopes, guests to the region are invited to explore the Charmonix area, a little village near Mt. Blanc for paragliding and excellent dining experiences. Visitors looking to enjoy the scenic mountain landscapes closers to the grounds may visit Annecy, with its stunning lake best viewed from the paddle boats for rent.

Other charming views in the area can be best experienced by traveling to nearby alpine towns Les Gets, Samoëns, Morillion, St. Gervais, Albertville and Morzine.
